Project 52: Week 4/ Catchlights

I can’t believe we’re on the 4th theme of the year!

This time we’re concentrating on catchlights and I love the opportunities of this one.

Catchlights are what makes your subject come alive. If you have good lighting – artificial or natural, and you have your animal in the right spot you can get some lovely ones. We ideally want to have the same amount in both eyes.

Here is the return of Finn. I got the chance to get some more photos on Monday, although typically, the sun came out when I was at home editing! I also started off on a bad note due to an infected eye. I had no contact lens in my dominant eye, so when I came to look through the viewfinder, I was baffled as to why the camera wasn’t focusing. I checked the AF, took the lens off and turned the camera on and off… The penny finally dropped and changed eyes!

Still, here in Finns eyes we see lovely catchlights – caused by a window!

I love any opportunity to photograph dogs so when we took Finn out for his walk I was hoping we’d get some nice weather and get some nice catchlights – instead it rained. I did get this though – placing him in front of the clouded sun with a slight enhancement in post!

One thing that reminds me of Finn is his drool, and while we usually remove such things from photos, I actually added more in the below shot because it was just him! Catchlight wise  – these aren’t great due to the lightest part of the sky being behind, so it shows that the placing of your subject helps!
